Mashadi War Rug
spices - tumeric, poppyseed, ginger, mace, pepper, etc., with cotton cord and popper firecrackers, -- on linen, mounted.
Edition 1 of 2. Print pulled from 2003 exhibition, Memento Mori, at LIPA Gallery. Review by Alan Artner in Chicago Tribune.
War Rugs are made by women in Afghanistan. I recreate them, using loose spices, in a manner inspired by Buddhist sand mandalas. The tedious labor of constructing them is just a fraction of what the real weavers experience. The "rug" is left vulnerable to footsteps or other disruption during the exhibition, then destroyed by pulling the monoprints and sweeping up the remains.
